Today I’m beginning a journey. For many years I’ve strived for mindfulness in my actions, from what I eat to how I spend my time and money. But it wasn’t until the Rana Plaza collapse in 2013, in which 1,130 garment workers were killed because of negligent conditions, that I began to think critically about the supply chain of what I wear.
My journey is an awakening. It’s awareness that shopping should not only be a pursuit of joy, but also an exercise in compassion and responsibility. I am fortunate enough to have ample resources and opportunities, and through this abundance I will give back. Instead of worrying about whether an item is “worth” the value, I plan to pay it forward by helping vulnerable populations escape the cycle of poverty as well as protecting vulnerable habitats of the earth.
I will work to find pieces that are both well designed and well sourced. I will find designers who are using ethical supply chains and fair trade practices. I will unearth brands that use sustainable and environmentally conscious materials. I will commit my own support for purpose-driven brands that contribute to charitable programs as well as provide resources for those attempting to escape poverty or support the earth.
Join me on my journey. Pay it forward. Give back. – Sara B
